Developed by the London
based psychotherapist, Avy Joseph, CBH is based on the ABCDE Ellis model of
CBT, Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy. The theory underpinning it
says that it is not events or circumstances in
life that disturb us but rather the view and beliefs that we hold about
them. To put it more simply, we don't just get upset but
upset ourselves by holding unhealthy beliefs.
The unhealthy belief
contains irrational demands either about ourselves, other people or the
world in general. The beliefs lie waiting to be summoned in the unconscious
mind. We may not recognise them as beliefs but we are affected
emotionally. We make demands about:
Ourselves
I
must do well and
have the love and approval of others or I'm no good as a person
Other People
Other
people must treat me
well and be kind to me and if they don't
they are no good and deserve to be punished
The World
I
must get what I want
and when I don't it's awful, life's a bitch and I can't bear it
These kind of beliefs can
lead to anxiety, self depreciation, depression, anger, self pity and
procrastination, all depending on the unhealthy belief. Each time you
unconsciously make one of these demands you find
yourself reacting emotionally and it can be very painful. This is
restricting the quality of your life and stopping you from growing
emotionally.
But you don't have to be
stuck with these unhealthy beliefs. You really do have a choice. With help
you can learn how to change the irrational unhealthy beliefs into
alternative healthy ones. This is the goal of Cognitive Behaviour
Hypnotherapy
Once the unhealthy belief
has been identified it can be weakened and replaced by a healthy belief that
is in keeping with good psychological health. It requires some work from you
to you to change the unhealthy belief into a healthy one and you will need
to practice. Rest assured though, you will have my support.
CBH is a goal focused
therapy undertaken both in and out of hypnosis. It can be helpful in a
variety of problems. It teaches a philosophy for rational living and
psychological good health.
The initial consultation
